HVDC (High voltage direct current) Bheramara
Project is one of the key energy infrastructural projects in Bangladesh which
seeks to boost power output by promoting cross-border power exchange with
India. First, it was 500 MW (megawatts) and further could reach 1000 MW scale.
The Power Development Board, Bangladesh (BPDB)
carried out the project in association with Power Grid Corporation of India Limited
(PGCIL). ABB was one of the prime contractors in the construction of the HVDC
substation.
Technical Aspects:
Technology: HVDC technology was
selected for such reasons as it has low energy losses when transmitting power
over long distances as compared to AC (Alternating Current) transmission.
Converter Station: As for the Bheramara
HVDC substation, the facility functions as a converter station, that transforms
the AC electricity to DC electricity for long-distance transmission and then converts
the DC electricity back to AC electricity for distribution in Bangladesh.
Economic Impact:
· It plays an essential role in improving Bangladesh's energy security by operationalizing non-domestic fossil-based power plants.
The purchase of power from India can be cheaper than the production of
electricity from costly imported fuels, so it can prove to be a cheaper avenue
for the country.
Electric power is one of the necessities for industries, and the
HVDC Bheramara project plays an important role in Bangladesh’s burgeoning
industrial sector where electricity demand is increasing day by day.
The project also enhances the flow of economic relations between
Bangladesh and India and contributes to the South Asian integration process.
The project aids in the delivery of the
government’s mission of attaining electricity for all citizens as well as quality
living standards and the economy.
HVDC Bheramara Project has become one of the
significant factors in Bangladesh’s energy security plan and development vision
for future economic progress.
